Third day of the second month and it is time for Phil Knight biography. But first thing first. Who is Phil Knight? The name may not be too familiar but this man has already changed many people’s life style and becomes really successful man in business. You yourself may wear one of his products right now. He is the co-founder and chairman of Nike, Inc. and currently placed as the 60th richest person in the world according to Forbes Magazine with estimated wealth US$13.1 billion.

Phil Knight biography

Philip Hampson Knight was born on February 24, 1938 in Oregon, USA. His father is a lawyer and newspaper publisher. He went to University of Oregon and graduated with journalism degree in 1959.

His business career was not started soon after he graduated. He went to serve the army for total eight years. One year after first year in the army, he attended Stanford Graduate School and graduated with business administration degree. While studying in Frank Shallenberger’s Small Business Class, he realized that he also had a passion as an entrepreneur.

His Nike business empire began with his trip to Japan where he found Tiger brand running shoes and decided to bring them back to the States. He showed the shoes to Bill Bowerman which agreed to found a sports company which they named Blue Ribbon Sports on January 25, 1964.

Nike’s first sales were surprisingly good and broke the record of Plymouth Valiant automobile sales. In 1969, Knight was able to leave his daily job as an accountant and worked full time for Blue Ribbon Sports.

It was Jeff Johnson, a friend of Phil Knight, who gave the idea to call the shoes Nike, after the Greek god of victory. Knight happily took the idea and that’s how you know this sports brand now.
