It all started when Alexei Mordashov married Yelena Novitskaya in 1986. Back then, Alexei Mordashov was still and employee in Cherepovetskiy Metallurgical Plant, still far from his billionaire status today. They were happily, or probably not, married for ten years until they decided to call it quits in 1996. The decision upon that divorce was that Mordashov was obliged to pay US$6,000 a year to Novitskaya and a €300 a month for child support. By this time, Mordashov was already elected as Severstal’s general director. Hence the big amount of the divorce settlement. From the divorce, Novitskaya also got their apartment and car. On the other hand, Mordashov was to keep their stocks and bonds.
The problem rose five years later when Mordashov climbed up to the position of Severstal’s stake controller. With 1,000 fold income, his wife would not just let him easily got away with it. Alexei Mordashov wife, or ex-wife to be exact, petitioned him for half of his stock and a quarter of his income. Unfortunately, after a long battle in court, the judge refused Novitskaya’s claim and charged her with 214 million rubles stamp tax instead in 2003.
Because of this, Novitskaya decided to take this case to the European Court of Human Rights and demanded US$500 million as the compensation for the decision made by Russian court. Although a partner of Noerr LLP in Moscow said that the chance of Alaexei Mordashov wife, Novitskaya, of winning was very unlikely, she seemed not to give up anytime soon.
